Here's how to double lap, dutch lap a slate roof and do a valley.

You have to Woody, to taper the transition. To stop dead could leave a 2" or thicker spot that couldn't be hidden. And it does add to the asthetics of the roof as another benefit. Form follows function in this case. :)

Interesting. I don't understand why they continued the valley fishtailing up to include the top 2 courses, though.
