Tremco on Vegetated Roofing Systems for All Roofing Types

Tremco Vegetated Roofing

By Molly Nelson, RCS Reporter.

The Tremco Vegetated Roofing (VR) line covers commercial, multi-residential and institutional markets.

For decades, Tremco Roofing has successfully provided high-performance products with a dedication to helping customers in all areas of the building envelope industry. The overall Tremco goal is putting care into their services, such as their vegetated roofing (VR) systems line. Tremco customizes its solutions to fit the vision of its VR customers.

The Tremco vegetated roofing line is designed for commercial, multi-residential and institutional markets. What’s unique about the VR line is that Tremco offers many different system options for the customer to choose from. Whether a customer is interested in a modular, lightweight or heavy-duty system, the VR line covers all the bases.

A vegetated roof system is a multi-component system, requiring multiple products that all need to work together to ensure proper function. Tremco can be a sole-source provider for the entire building envelope and will provide a cost-effective solution for the customer, which takes the complication out of determining what products work well with each other. Not all roofing membrane systems are compatible with vegetated roofing systems under certain conditions, and if not evaluated correctly before applying a vegetated roof, there can be complications further down the road. This is why Tremco completes a robust evaluation prior to applying the system and will never recommend products that are not compatible. Additionally, a sole-source provider is beneficial for taking the complication out of warranty claims that can be difficult to manage with vegetated roofing systems.

Looking deeper into what makes Tremco a unique roofing manufacturing company for vegetated roofing systems, Tremco’s VR team lead, Rick Buist, states that Tremco “has walked a road that a lot of green roof companies have not — that is the advent of the meadow green roof.” (A design of low growing ground cover succulent on vegetated roofs popular in Germany.) “It’s robust in many ways, but when you get to items like encouragement of pollinators, the need to hold as much stormwater as possible during storm events, cooling a building, etc., a meadow roof is much more effective and it’s worked well for Tremco.” This style of vegetated roofs has become increasingly popular on the East Coast due to its resilience to more extreme climates. Prairie grasses have robust root systems to retain and prevent stormwater from running off into waterways.

A closer look at Tremco’s VR Line

Each product line within Tremco’s vegetated roofing systems has unique characteristics, covering a wide variety of needs when constructing a vegetated roof. For example, the VR Mod line, which is a modular system, is very popular because it is easy to install. “It’s like snapping Legos™ together to achieve a nice green roof,” stated Buist. The VR Lite system is another popular choice that is a built-up system for extensive vegetated roofs. A more flexible system is the VR Max, which can accommodate anything from a four-inch shortgrass meadow all the way to a garden with trees and shrubs. If structural capacity and weight is a concern for the roof design, Tremco also offers the VR Ultralite and Ultralite Plus systems, which are lightweight systems for extensive vegetated roofs.

All of Tremco’s VR lines are high performing and focus on quality and longevity; if maintained properly, they should last indefinitely. The products are limited by the lifespan of the roofing membrane and the life of vegetation on the roof system.

How do Tremco’s products make a roofing professional’s life easier?

Tremco works hard to take into consideration what roofing professionals face on the job site. These considerations are significant in their product design, how the products are packaged and shipped, and their commitment to giving installation advice to contractors to make the process easier.

Customer relations at Tremco extend even further with their TremCare™ Green vegetated roof maintenance program. This program offers preventive maintenance and housekeeping to ensure the vegetated roof functions properly, as well as a 24/7 leak response hotline. This is a great option offered for roofing professionals and facility owner/managers after a vegetated roof is installed, so they don’t have to worry about the roof moving forward.
