Technology Embedded in the Roof

Tremco Technology Embedded in the roof
January 8, 2020 at 6:00 a.m.

By Karen L. Edwards, RCS Editor.

Manufacturer embeds RFID chip into every POWERply® Endure® membrane for ease of product identification and maintenance.

Technology is a powerful tool that has the potential to change the roofing industry. We are already using robotic welders on the roof, aerial measurement tools, CRMs, project management programs, mobile apps and more. But have you thought about what the potential is for using technology in our roofing products? Tremco Roofing has.

The industry-leading manufacturer is a proponent of implementing technology to improve processes and services whenever possible. They have taken the next step by incorporating technology into every roll of their POWERply Endure membrane through their RooF-ID™ technology. RooF-ID uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, in which a chip containing stored information is attached to an object for tracking and identification purposes. The chips are read by scanners using radio waves.

According to the company, an RFID chip is incorporated into the back of the membrane and “if information on a roll is needed, a technician walks and scans an area of the roof, [sending the information] to Tremco Operations.” The company cross references the data and numbers against their records. If any action is required, they are able to “handle it quickly and efficiently.”

The RooF-ID chips are resistant to short-term effects of installation in cold or hot asphalt and can survive long-term on the roof. The chips solve the problem of needing to identify a membrane after it is installed, which used to be virtually impossible.

RFID technology isn’t new. It has been in mainstream use for a number of years. Many companies use it to track equipment, laptops, phones, and consumers use it to track their pets. So, while not new, this use of it in roofing is a new approach. The technology should make life a lot easier for both contractors and building owners as they need access to maintenance and service records, warranty information and more.
