OSHA rules violations have staggering consequences

By Roofing Tools Online

We’ve all heard the phrase “rules are meant to be broken.”

And that phrase certainly rings true in the construction industry, where three of OSHA’s (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) most frequently cited violations occur.

The cost of the fines can be hefty. But prices cannot be put on lives. The most disconcerting thing on the topic of fall related deaths at construction sites is that most falls are preventable.

In 2015 alone, the United States averaged nearly one death per day, from falls on construction worksites. 364 out of 937 deaths on construction sites were the result of falls.

Despite knowing the dangers of the profession, according to OSHA, Fall Protection violations topped the list in 2015 with 6,721 violations of rule (1926.501).

Purchasing the proper fall-protection gear and having a competent person on the crew to test the equipment and get it set up properly would drastically cut down on falls.

According to research, 1-out of-10 roofers will suffer an injury on the job every year, with falls being the Number 1 cause of injury. Another telling fact is that most injuries occur on the first year on the job. Making sure everyone receives proper OSHA training is a vital step to having a safe work zone.

Roofing Tools Online offers everything you need to be OSHA Compliant in the Fall Protection category. Our products can keep you compliant, keep you safe and save you lots of money. We offer Fall Protection Safety Kits from leaders in the industry, like Guardian and Rock Solid.

No. 3 on the list was Scaffolding Violations, with 4,295. And seventh was Ladders with 2,489 violations.

Together, through proper training and use of safety equipment, we can bring these numbers down.

Yes, rules were meant to be broken. But these rules have life and death consequences.
