Riverview Yacht Condo's Re-roofing Solution Found in Roof Hugger

Roof Hugger Riverview Yacht Condo

By Roof Hugger.

Design North immediately made a recommendation for Roof Hugger to Riverview’s proprietors.

Roof Hugger Retrofit Systems was the name that metal roofing contractor Design North, Inc. thought of when asked for a re-roofing solution to prevent chronic leaking problems. The Alaskan Yacht storage facility in Juneau, Alaska had re-roofed two of their buildings. With a climate that produces very high winds, over five feet of rainfall and seven feet of snow per year, structural design, scheduling and installation were all crucial to the project. These buildings would need a product that could be installed directly over old problematic roofs during somewhat inclement weather and without interrupting the building inhabitants or its operations or exposing the building contents to damage as a typical roof tear-off and replacement does.

To the benefit of Riverview’s boat owners, a new, long-term performance, 24-gauge standing seam metal roof was installed over the 16-gauge Roof Huggers. The 14” wide roof panels were roll-formed at the jobsite in 51-foot lengths, thus eliminating any laps from the roof’s ridge to its eaves.

The Roof Hugger Systems have been tested to determine that they strengthen the existing building roof purlins to accommodate the additional weight of the new roofing system plus they can meet current building code requirements. In addition, the air-space created between the old and new roofs provided what is known as Above Sheathing Ventilation, or “ASV.” According to Oak Ridge National Laboratories near Knoxville, Tennessee, these assemblies produce a convective ventilated plenum that assist in reducing heat loss in the colder months and heat gain in warmer months by as much as 30-45% depending on the type of metal roof coating. This benefit comes at a very low-price tag.

Design North’s construction crew of seven men completed the 46,000-square-foot project on schedule within six weeks.
