Louisiana Veteran Gifted a New Roof After 30 Years Without Repairs

louisiana veteran gets new roof
April 6, 2022 at 6:00 a.m.

By Evelyn Witterholt, RCS Reporter.

Thanks to the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project and a local contracting company, this veteran no longer has to worry about the roof over his head.

Alvin Petry served in Vietnam for two years and was recently thanked for his service with a brand-new roof. The veteran currently lives in Lafayette, Louisiana with his two daughters. When he decided he was not pleased with the damaged roof over their heads, Jim Olivier’s Roofing and Owens Corning stepped up and helped him out.

After 30 years with no repairs, Alvin’s roof needed to be replaced. It had taken so much damage over the years, especially being in hurricane-prone Louisiana. He decided enough was enough and reached out to the Lafeyette chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Shortly after he applied, crew members from Jim Olivier’s Roofing were at his home, replacing his damaged roof for free.

The partnership between Habitat for Humanity, Owens Corning and Jim Olivier’s Roofing is what made this replacement possible. Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project has been providing free roofs to veterans across the country since 2016. They provided the materials and Jim Olivier’s Roofing provided the labor for the project. Jim Olivier’s Roofing is also an Owens Corning Platinum contractor.

The Owner of Jim Olivier’s Roofing, Anna Olivier, says they are more than happy to give back Alvin for his service. "We’ve looked forward to this project because we are so blessed and we love to be able to give back to our community" she told Fox News 15. "We would like to thank Mr. Petry for his service to our country and for serving and for giving up his time.”

With a new roof over his head, Alvin is immensely grateful for this charitable act. “I'm getting a brand new roof and I couldn't be more happy,” he told Fox News 15. "It was badly needed and I can't say what an outstanding job they're doing.”
