How Important is the Air We Breathe?

In today's market homeowners need to know the air we breathe is safe.

By Andy Swan, Roof Saver

In the U.S., about 17 million people have asthma and up to 30% of them are sensitive to molds and fungal allergens. (Western Roofing 2001). It is estimated that 25% of airways disease and 60% of interstitial lung disease may be associated with moisture in the home or work environment, (HUD 2001) and where there is moisture, there is most definitely mold.

A poorly ventilated attic is a leading reason for bad air in the home. Moisture condensation increases which creates a prime condition for the growth of molds and fungal allergens. Moisture also leads to less effective insulation resulting in higher heating bills in the winter and excessive heat build-up in the summer for higher cooling costs. Inefficient attic ventilation ultimately means a shorter lifespan for the roof and long-term degradation of the attic structure.

Avoid mold and mildew growth by ventilating the attic. A balanced system of soffit vents beneath the eaves and a continuous ridge vent allows overheated and moisture laden air out and fresh air in. Relief of excess heat makes a home more comfortable and saves on cooling costs. Moist air must be allowed to exit the attic to avoid growth of mold and mildew.

Choose a ridge vent solution such as Roof Saver that passes all building codes, provides a 40-year warranty, deters the growth of mold and mildew, keeps attics dry – deterring rot and structural degradation, is environmentally friendly, fire rated and has no maintenance or operating costs.
