Garrett Kurtt and Jessi West Gunteski - Building Code Information by Jurisdiction

Garrett Kurtt POD
October 14, 2021 at 6:00 p.m.

By Colin Sheehan, RCS Reporter.

Helping contractors with their building code headaches is what OneClick Code does best.

In Season 3, Episode 40 of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth visits with Garrett Kurtt, CEO and Founder of OneClick Code and Jessi West Gunteski, OneClick Code’s director of marketing and PR. OneClick Code started with a mission to lessen the confusion of attaining correct building code information so contractors can create accurate estimates and get paid what they deserve. In this podcast, Heidi, Garrett and Jessi discuss the challenges associated with finding the right roofing codes, sales tax information, manufacturer specifications, permit fees and jurisdictional authority and how OneClick Code can help.

When Garrett initially started researching for OneClick Code, he found that all building code information was being held in local municipalities. Since then, OneClick Code has focused on curating accurate and easily accessible building code information for everyone involved in the roofing or construction process.

“We set out three and a half years ago with not much direction, other than we need to figure out the building codes,” said Garrett. “In that course of time, we've built relationships with those municipalities, where [now we are on] first-name basis with them. Or if you call in to the cities and counties, they will refer to our application to answer their commonly asked questions about building codes, because we have their documentation for them.”

To monitor around 30,000 cities and counties, OneClick Code has a lot of processes in place and a lot of hardworking people ensuring the accuracy of their database is maintained. As you can imagine, this is easier said than done. Zip codes, for instance, do not always line up with their correct counties, creating much building code confusion. For instance, if using a US postal address to find jurisdiction having authority, you will be wrong 40-50% of the time, based on proprietary data from OneClick.

“If you're mis-assigning a house, then you're getting all of the information wrong. So, you're getting the sales tax wrong. You're getting all of the code enforcement line items wrong, so your estimates can be off by 25%,” said Jessi. “Contractors are using OneClick Code to get paid what they deserve. So, if they get the jurisdiction right, they're getting the sales tax right, they're getting all the line items that they deserve to be paid for.”

Another great element to OneClick Code is the accessibility of the service. They have a web application, oneclickcode.com, as well as an application available on iOS and Android.

"I like to tell people that it's the first app that they should use when they get on a roof, because jurisdiction and building codes are the building blocks of an estimate,” said Jessi. “If you get those things wrong, then your estimate is going to be wrong.”

Listen to the entire podcast to hear how OneClick Code provides solutions for roofing companies across the nation.
