Aging Roof Retrofitted Using Spray Foam

General Coatings Aging Roof Retrofitted
January 7, 2020 at 6:00 p.m.

By Lauren White, RCS Reporter.

A cancer research facility’s roof received a much-needed upgrade.

NeoGenomics, a cancer research center in Aliso Viejo, California needed a solution to improve their building’s energy efficiency and prevent roof leaks.  “Olen Properties turned to its trusted roofing contractor, Applied Roofing Services, to specify and install closed-cell spray polyurethane foam (ccSPF),” according to the case studyGeneral Coatings Manufacturing Corp. (GCM) supplied the system and features Honeywell’s Enovate ® 245fa blowing agent because of its proven performance.

Spray foam was the roofing product of choice for this project.  NeoGenomics is a leader in cancer-focused genetic testing. That being said, they had “...strict requirements that the roof retrofit meet the highest safety standards and not disrupt its sensitive laboratory environment,” as noted in the case study.  Other roofing products, like single-ply membrane, were evaluated to use on the roof, but the ccSPF was the superior choice. “Applied as a liquid that rapidly expands into rigid foam, ccSPF provides an outstanding thermal, air, and moisture barrier,” General Coatings explains.  Roof protrusions and penetrations are sealed off with ccSPF because of its unique ability to contour around them.

The retrofit of this 70,000-square-foot roof was completed by Applied Roofing Services.  They were able to complete the project without disrupting any of the lab services. The spraying was done on the weekends while the building was unoccupied, which prevented noise issues.  A complete roof tear-off wasn’t needed since the ccSPF spray foam was used. In doing this, they reduced the project time and didn’t have any landfill waste.

The ccSPF spray foam provided a durable surface for the aging roof of the cancer research facility.  Using General Coatings roof coating system was non-intrusive, timely, and a superior solution. The retrofit of NeoGenomics roof helped eliminate their roof leaks and made the building more energy-efficient.
