By Cotney Construction Law.

In the past, the construction industry has slowly adapted new technology.

This norm is changing. Industry innovators are quick to implement technology so as to better perform tasks. New technology may become an active means of avoiding disputes. This is part one of a two-part guide which will discuss technological advancements in the construction industry. Part one will discuss drones, building information modeling, and project management applications.

Thanks to changes in FAA drone policies, drones will be heavily used in the construction process. Drones have the capacity of inspecting construction sites for potential risks prior to project start and during project completion.

Building information modeling can be used by construction companies to create 3D simulated models of the structures being built. Building information modeling can help identify design issues before a project breaks ground.

Project management applications can help general contractors manage project schedules, send reports, take pictures of potential issues, and compare project data with financial information all from their phones. Project management applications can turn blueprints into collaborative tools--which in the long run avoids costly changes and disputes.
