Peace and Stability Gifted to U.S. Army Veteran

RCS Peace and Stability
August 30, 2021 at 6:00 p.m.

By Cass Jacoby, RCS Reporter.

Monya Collins and her family excitedly envision their new life as they watch their home form before their eyes.

Thanks to the third annual Veteran Build put on by Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity, Monya Collins and her three children are getting a new home. The Coloradan veteran served for five years in the Army and Colorado National Guard. Now, through a partnership between the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project and the Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity, Monya and her family are the recipients of a roof replacement.

“Our veterans are used to giving help, but are not so great at asking for help,” Executive Director of Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity Kris Lewis Medina told KRDO. “When people come back to stay here after they’ve served, we need to be able to provide them affordable housing.”

Materials were donated by Owens Corning and labor was provided from Total Roofing & Restoration, an Owens Corning Platinum Roofing Contractor. “It’s an honor, to be honest,” CEO of Total Roofing and Restoration Scott Mclntyre told FOX 21 News. “If it’s the littlest thing we can do for them and help them afford a home like this, we’re glad to do it."

For now, Monya and her kids are envisioning their new life in their home. This will be the first time the family of four will have their own bedrooms. “We’ve always been used to small apartments. The kids are excited. They all get their own room. We have a backyard and front porch. Just the little things that really are important to us right now,” says Monya. “This house means stability and a place of peace for my kids and my family.”

Monya tells KRDO that the process has been fun for the whole family. “It's really exciting because we get to see the progress. I take my kids here every couple weeks to show the progress and so they can be a part of the process too. I’m just so appreciative for everything that my family has been blessed with.”
