DECRA Tile Tops Florida Condos

DECRA Tile was installed over existing shake roof while meeting Miami-Dade County approval.

High winds are always a concern in Florida. The Villages of Sandalwood Lakes North had a mansard roof that needed to be replaced and the owner did not want to remove the existing wood shake roof. DECRA Tile was chosen for this project because it is installed on a batten system. The batten system makes it easier for a product to go directly over wood shakes.

Since the project was in a high wind area, steel hat section purlins were used instead of nominal 2 x 2 wood battens. The versatility of the product makes it easy to tailor the roof system to the project, giving the owner the best installation possible.

DECRA products have been tested for Miami-Dade County approval. With the use of additional fasteners, DECRA Tile meets the requirements of this stringent code. The interlocking structure and the unique horizontal fastening method further enable DECRA products to withstand high winds and add to wind-shear strength.

Lightweight by nature, DECRA Tile was perfect for this project. Furthermore, the Tile is a single course pressed panel of aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel. Unlike asphalt shingles, which weigh more and are made of a front and back piece adhered together, there is no possibility of product delamination. Delamination occurs when the back piece of the asphalt shingle separates from the front piece and hangs down.

DECRA products require little to no maintenance and have a long lifecycle; important considerations for the owner of this project.
