Our first Lunch & Learn is here! The new educational series from RoofersCoffeeShop® is designed to bring learning opportunities to those who work on the inside team of roofing companies. Whether you’re talking to customers, giving estimations or buying roofing products for your crew, this series is for you! For our first Lunch & Learn, RCS President Heidi J. Ellsworth hears from David Gardiner and Tiffany Newman from the Canadian team of Weatherproofing Technologies Inc., part of the Tremco Construction Products Group family. 

WTI has successfully made a presence internationally with their division in Canada. David leads the team there with support from Tiffany, and with their combined 36 years of experience, they are already making quite an impact. In this Lunch & Learn, they discuss several topics that are useful for those who want to expand their roofing company and have better safety practices in place.

David and Tiffany give great advice based on their own experience of expanding WTI in Canada. One of the topics they touch on is how finding the right people to hire makes all the difference. “Communication was one of the biggest things we were looking for,” David says. “Somebody that can do the work, that’s all fine and dandy. But if they’re not properly communicating that it is done...that’s always going to lead to issues.” 

They also go into detail about the line of safety solutions Tremco and WTI offer, including the ways they help building owners inspect their roofs safely. Tiffany discusses how their team does a lot of work educating building owners and operators on how to inspect their roof safely. She states these inspections often get overlooked because “sometimes unfortunately the roof is the last thing people think of because people don’t generally see it too often.”

Why it is so important to invest in and support your employees with ongoing training. 

In Season 3, Episode 42 of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth visits with Tom Biller of Tremco Roofing about how employee and contractor retention factor into the labor shortage. The two discuss the overall importance of strong onboarding training for employees. 

Tom has been with Tremco since he graduated college 28 years ago. He now works as the training manager for Tremco’s Roofing and Building Maintenance division. “I’ve worn a lot of different hats in my career with Tremco, [but] I really found my place here in the training department,” says Tom. 

Tom tells Heidi about the ongoing training that Tremco provides for contractors, sales representatives, the design community, and more with regards to roofing products, systems and installation. Every employee hired by Tremco is trained on all aspects of the roofing industry, a testament to the way that Tremco invests in their employees. 

“When you join Tremco, you'll get an opportunity to come through one of our Roofing 101 classes, and that's where we introduce people who aren't familiar with the roofing industry to basic roofing concepts, and then of course to the Tremco solutions,” says Tom. 

Tremco’s training programs are extensive. For contractors, Tremco can provide hands-on trainings for their products, which can be conducted for entire crews. Tremco Contractor Support Specialists can even join contractors in the field and provide direct instruction while on the roof. 

“We certainly feel that when you properly train an employee, they feel confident, they feel empowered to do their job and they want to learn more,” says Tom. “Training people properly to do their jobs, training people to advance in the company, really is key to retaining good people.”

Hear what Mardee Billingsley has to say about working at Tremco and WTI (Weatherproofing Technologies Incorporated) for over 25 years. 

Mardee Billingsley is the executive vice president of Elevate, a program through Tremco WTI, the service subsidiary of Tremco Roofing and Building Products. Mardee has been with Tremco for 25 years and while she did not grow up wanting to be in roofing and construction, she soon discovered some amazing opportunities working with a sales representative from Tremco, and never looked back.

“[I’ve been] a construction manager, national operations manager and so on. I have managed and been a part of over a billion dollars' worth of construction projects myself and I can safely say that I’ve made friends with some of the best people in the business,” said Mardee in this video documenting employee testimonials. “This organization has provided me the opportunity to travel worldwide, grow personally and professionally and care for my family, which it will for you. I share my story of happens chance, because I’m proud to be in this industry and after 25 years can also say I’m proud to work for this organization.”

These cold weather solutions provide unmatched restoration, renovation and replacement support for working through the toughest of months.  

Tremco Roofing helps contractors stay on the job all winter and can help facility managers prevent major roofing problems in the spring. With metal, cold- and hot-applied built-up and modified bitumen, single ply and liquid applied solutions, Tremco will help you keep roofs watertight and working through the cold.  

Tremco provides a detailed brochure of products that can help you work in the winter. A summary of the products is available below:  

1 – TremLock® T-138 Shingle Recover System and T-238 Standing Seam System 

Tremco Roofing’s TremLock T-138 Shingle Recover System and T-238 Standing Seam System provide building owners with long-term and economical roofing solutions with easy installation, individual panel replaceability and improved weather tightness.  The T-138 Shingle Recover System can be installed directly on top of shingles, eliminating the need for tear off or underlayment saving labor and risk. The T-238 Standing Seam System is a perfect option for retrofitting or re-roofing over open span or solid decking construction.   

2 – BURmastic® Built Up Roofing Systems 

Tremco Roofing’s BURmastic systems have become a standard in the roofing industry. This system can be surfaced with gravel, marble chips or any approved coating system. With its multi-ply construction, the BURmastic roofing system is incredibly durable, waterproof and can be installed in cold process adhesive. 

3 – THERMastic® Built-Up Roofing (BUR) and Hot POWERply® Modified Bitumen (MB) Systems 

The watertight and highly durable THERMastic built-up roofing systems and hot POWERply roofing systems are made of multiple plies adhered with high quality, enhanced THERMastic hot-melt adhesive. This intricate system is nothing like a typical mopping asphalt, as Hot POWERply systems are comprised of two or more modified bitumen plies, which are adhered within the THERMastic adhesive. 

4 – PowerFAST Modified Bitumen (MB) System 

The PowerFAST Modified Bitumen (MB) System includes a POWERply cap sheet membrane adhered to a high-performance POWERply anchor membrane, which is mechanically attached directly to the deck surface. This thoughtful design allows the PowerFAST roof system to create a quick, watertight and wind uplift-resistant seal. 

5 – Heat-Welded Modified Bitumen (MB) System 

Part of the POWERply® line, this heat welded mod-bit system incorporates two or three MB sheets and is installed on the roof without adhesives. During installation, the base membrane is welded to a coverboard or cap sheet using a propane torch or hot air welding equipment. All other remaining parts of the roofing system, like insulation or a coverboard, can be adhered using hot asphalt, low-rise foam or mechanical fasteners.  

6 – Tremco Single Ply Roofing Systems 

TremPly KEE, TremPly TPO, TremPly Max TPO and TPA systems all feature white, reflective surfaces and are great for all kinds of commercial roofs. They are lightweight but strong and resistant to pollutants. All single ply roofing systems have thermoplastic membranes and heat-welded seams, which eliminates the need for adhesives or tapes.  

7 – AlphaGuard™ PUMA Liquid Applied Roofing Systems
