APOC returns to the IRE show floor with demos that flaunt the fun of an in-person show. 

After a year away, APOC returned to the International Roofing Expo with a bang! Throughout the first two days of the show, the APOC team dazzled the crowd on ICP’s stage and sound system. The demos consistently drew in a crowd to watch the ease and swiftness of the installations, and talk with experts about these products. 

Starting at noon, every hour APOC showcased their products, with host John Walker excitingly educating visitors and passersby on the key features alongside David Spaulding, Dan Ferris and CJ Sharp who performed the various demos.

The North / East Roofing Contractors Association (NERCA) is set to host its 94th annual trade show.  

This year’s North / East Roofing Contractors Association (NERCA) Convention and Trade Show is expected to have a great turnout. The event is set to take place March 1 – 3 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Although the deadline for registration has passed, we are currently offering a free pass that contractors can use at the door to attend the event. 

With nearly 200 booths and quality educational seminars, this convention is great event for contractors in the northeastern United States to attend. Build trust with clients by helping them create a maintenance program for commercial roofing systems using these three steps. 

One of the best ways to build and maintain a client’s trust is by helping them out during tough times, such as during this stressful winter season. Since most people want to avoid costly repairs, you can help your customers by implementing a preventative winterization maintenance program for their commercial roofing system. Below are three-steps to creating this program that you can share with your clients: 

1 - The first step in a successful winterization is a thorough cleaning. 

To keep the roof waterproof, make sure to keep all water ways clean and free of debris. These waterways remove the water from rain and snow melt and if not properly clean allowing unimpeded water flow off the roof it can lead to dangerous roof load conditions and damaging roof leaks. Check for the following: 

• Gutters - Remove plant debris. 

• Downspouts - Ensure they are clean and clear by using a hose to confirm the unobstructed flow of water. 

• Scuppers - Remove plant and windblown debris. 

• Field drains - Remove, clean and replace the screen. Ensure water channels in the clamping rings are clear. 

Debris can also collect in the corners of parapet walls and around base flashings. Be sure to check the whole roof surface and remove any debris so that it cannot make its way to the waterways creating a clog. 

2 - Once the cleaning is done, it’s time to do a complete inspection looking for deterioration, storm damage, splits and cracks, pulling, tenting or fish mouthing.  

Some key areas to check include: 

• Scuppers 

• Drains 

• Curbs 

• Base flashings 

• Penetrations 

• Field seams 

• Coping caps 

• Gutters and Down spouts 

3 - Once areas in need of repair are identified, ensure you are using a high-quality roofing material that is compatible with your roofing membrane. 

When conducting any repair, use the four P’s method to achieve a long-lasting result: 

• Prep - Get the repair area clean and dry. 

• Prime - Apply the appropriate primer as needed for a good bond. 

• Patch - Make the repair according to manufacturer's requirements. 

• Protect - If repair materials require additional UV protection. 

Note: Any effective repair is fully reinforced and UV protected. 

Once the snow starts to fly and the temperatures drop, conducting roof repairs can be extremely challenging and difficult. Identify the problem areas before the need for emergency repairs arise.

Dan White, a cherished member of the roofing industry and family man, has sadly passed away. 

Dan White, long-time technical expert and valued member of the APOC family, passed away in August 2021 following a hard-fought battle with COVID-19. He is remembered as a loving husband and father, a tireless advocate for the roofing industry and a true friend to many he worked closely with throughout his career. Dan was 67.

A veteran in commercial roofing, Dan joined APOC in 2005 and made an immediate impact on the organization. For Dan and his customers, there was no technical roofing problem that could not be overcome with the application of sound roofing practices and high-quality products. Dan’s wealth of knowledge was the foundation of APOC’s technical capabilities—he was always ready and willing to help customers overcome a challenge and perform quality work.

As a friend and coworker, Dan made a lasting impact on all those he worked with. His colleagues recall Dan’s unflinching honesty and fast friendship. He leaves behind countless relationships that will be valued forever.

“Dan was an incredible ally, mentor, confidant and friend,” said APOC Field Systems Coordinator John Walker. “I learned everything I know about APOC from Dan, and I had the honor of working side by side with him for more than 10 years. He was an amazing person and led an incredible life.”

The Gardner-Gibson family cannot thank Dan enough for what he contributed to our company and our industry,” said Bobby Hyer, VP Sales, Roofing & Waterproofing. “There are very few people that will touch your life like Dan, aka ‘DW’. DW was the definition of integrity. His word was gold, his intentions venerable and his friendship unbreakable. He touched many hearts and we will all miss him dearly.”

Dan lived in Tampa with his beloved wife Allie and son Charlie. In his spare time, Dan was an avid boater, fisherman and collector of vintage firearms, hobbies he cherished sharing with his family and friends.
